Fabulous sterling silver necklace by the renowned silversmith William Spratling. This modernist necklace features a center sphere with 4 silver cones that dangle beneath. It is flanked by a bird on each side. The necklace is finished with a paper clip chain interspersed with additional silver spheres. Spratling based this design on images he saw painted on water jars in the Guerrero area.
It is stamped with the Spratling hallmark (which is partially cut off) and the secondary applied cartouche that reads Spratling Silver. This dates it to sometime between 1940 and 1946.
The necklace is 20” long. Each of the birds measures 1 1/4” x 2 1/8”. The center pendant is 1 1/4” x 2”.
Unfortunately a portion of the chain was missing. I replaced it with a sterling silver paperclip chain and spring ring. If you look at the last picture it shows a ruler measuring out the 6” that were replaced. Also a little piece of one of the loops on the center pendant is missing. Still a stunning necklace and a great piece of jewelry history!
