These stunning family photos & mourning brooches are crafted with 14k gold and feature daguerreotype and tintype photos, originating from the civil war era. A timeless way to honor loved ones and preserve family history.
The first brooch shown is a mourning brooch of the father. The photo is a gem size daguerreotype covered with beveled glass and set in a 14k gold and enamel brooch. It is finished with a tube hinge and C clasp.
The brooch measures 1.25” x 1.5”.
The photo measures 3/4” x 1”.
There are some scratches on the surface of the glass and a small area of enamel loss on the upper left.
Jeweler tested and acid tested as 14k gold.
The second brooch shown is a swivel brooch. It houses jewel size tintypes of the mother and father under beveled glass on either side of the swivel. It is set in 14k gold with machine engraved detailing. The back is finished with a tube hinge and safety clasp.
The brooch measures 1 1/8” x 1 1/2”.
The photos each measure 5/8” x 7/8”.
Jeweler tested and acid tested as 14k gold.
There are some small spots and scratches on the glass. The safety catch was likely replaced. Swivel works as it should.
The third piece shown is part of what was once a large swivel brooch with tintype photos of the mother and son on either side. Both photos are housed under beveled glass. Unfortunately whatever it was housed in is now missing but there are holes on either end that were clearly attached to a swivel at one time.
The photos each measure 1 1/2” x 1 7/8”.
There are some light scratches and spotting to the glass. The tintype of the mother is bubbled around the edges with a few loose flakes.
The fourth item is a hand tinted ambrotype of the son. It is framed with ornate gold trim and set in a velvet lined Gutta percha frame.
The frame measures a little over 2” wide x 2.75” tall.
The photo is 1.5” x 2”.
Obviously half of the Gutta percha case is missing.
None of the pieces are marked.
Each piece has some age appropriate wear but overall this set is in good condition for its age and an amazing piece of history.
